Barry, the national hero

Barry was one of the rescue dogs at the hospice on the Great St Bernard Pass. The pass was one of the first north-south routes, and so the monks who ran the hospice were under considerable strain, particularly in winter, to rescue traders and travellers from dangerous situations and from ice and snow. In doing so, they often put their own lives at risk. Among many other stories, Barry, the rescue dog, emerged as a legend from that era. Old documents state that he saved up to 40 people. Barry is and always has been a source of pride in the history of avalanche dogs, and his bravery and keen sense of danger are still remembered by people to this day.

Why the name “Barrys” for our restaurant?

We have named our restaurant after Barry the rescue dog because his story, more than almost any other, embodies what we strive to live out every day in Grindelwald: genuine hospitality, courage, warmth and a special bond with the mountains. Barry lived over 200 years ago on the Great St Bernard Pass and became known as a legendary rescue dog – a loyal companion who gave people hope in difficult times. This moving and adventurous story continues to inspire us to this day and is brought to life through various pictures displayed in our restaurant.

Barry’s Restaurant, Bar & Lounge is a unique and vibrant restaurant in the centre of Grindelwald – for discerning connoisseurs who seek character rather than the run-of-the-mill. Like Barry, we combine our Alpine roots with a contemporary flair: this blend of Alpine charm and modern style is evident in our interior as well as in our menu. Our cuisine delights with a variety of regional and seasonal dishes, constantly creating new favourite moments – down-to-earth, but never boring.

Set against a lovingly crafted mountain hut atmosphere and with around 300 seats spread over two floors, we offer a wide range of options: from cosy get-togethers to special occasions and events.

That is why our establishment bears its name with pride: Barry reminds us that real stories, real values and real encounters are what bring people together – back then at the Great St Bernard Pass and today in the heart of Grindelwald.

Today, St. Bernard dogs are still bred on the St. Bernard and the foundation “Fondation Barry” has set itself the goal of ensuring the continued existence of the St. Bernard breed according to ethical and scientific findings.
